What Is a Wisdom Tooth?
Wisdom Teeth Removals in Alpha Dental
A wisdom tooth, scientifically known as a third molar, is one of the last set of molars located at the back of the mouth. These teeth typically emerge in individuals between the ages of 17 and 25, a phase of life often referred to as the “age of wisdom,” hence the name. While most people develop four wisdom teeth, some may have fewer or even none at all. Unlike other teeth that serve specific purposes in chewing, wisdom teeth don’t play a major role in modern human dentition. Due to their late eruption and positioning at the back of the oral cavity, they often cause dental issues and may require extraction.
- Tooth decay: Due to their location at the back of the mouth, wisdom teeth can be hard to clean, making them susceptible to tooth decay.
- Cysts or tumors: In rare cases, cysts or tumors can form around an impacted wisdom tooth, potentially damaging the jawbone and surrounding teeth.
- Pain and discomfort: Even if no visible problems arise, a wisdom tooth can cause significant pain or discomfort, especially as it tries to emerge.
- Impaction: Often, there isn’t enough space in the mouth for wisdom teeth to emerge properly. When this happens, they can become impacted, meaning they either remain trapped beneath the gum or bone or emerge at an incorrect angle.
- Crowding: A growing wisdom tooth can push adjacent teeth, causing misalignment or crowding of teeth.
- Infection or gum disease: Partially emerged wisdom teeth can create pockets around themselves where bacteria can accumulate, leading to infections or gum disease.
